What we do
National Grid is pivotal to the energy systems in the UK and the north eastern United States. We aim to serve customers well and efficiently, supporting the communities in which we operate?and making possible the energy systems of the future.
We are at the forefront of many of the big energy challenges. Some of the crucial work we’re doing includes:
Building sub-sea electricity interconnectors to join the UK to renewable energy on the continent – such as Norway’s hydropower.
Developing the infrastructure to enable affordable decarbonisation of energy across the north eastern US – e.g. solar generation schemes and offshore wind connections.
Creating new ways to balance the electricity system in the UK during a time of rapid change in the sources of generation –?from coal to wind and solar –?and with the challenges that creates.
Inspiring the next generation of engineers?and supporting their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education – the energy industry needs talented people, now and in the future.
A fundamental aspect of all of our work is the way we collaborate – with government, regulators, suppliers and partners, for example. We also strive to develop a deep understanding of customer and community needs.
